KINDWORKS

Inspiring Action for a Kinder World

Kind Works Cooking Salma Hassan Ali

KindWorks’ mission is to meet pressing local needs and to nurture a sense of community, by mobilizing individuals in volunteer service. We organize a range of projects—from cooking nutritious meals with recovered food for area shelters, to setting up apartments for refugee families, to mentoring incarcerated men and women, to collecting books and educational games for kids in under-resourced communities—with the hope of realizing a kinder and more equitable world. It’s been a privilege to volunteer to help lead KindWorks as Chief Inspiration Officer, Vice President of the Board, and Storyteller since we started thirteen years ago.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we launched a “KINDdemic”—a pandemic of kindness—to encourage safe and meaningful ways to give back at a time when the needs were so great. With our new initiative, “KindSoup for the Soul,” we gather in our kitchens every week, and connect via Zoom, to cook a big pot of soup to donate to shelters, food banks, neighbors, and others who could benefit. As part of our digital empowerment program we collect used computers and laptops, refurbish them, and get them to students and families in need. Our wide variety of projects each month allow our over 2000 volunteers to join as their schedules allow.

Our vision is to nurture a community where no one is seen as an “other.” In fact, we’d like to change the meaning of the word and use it as an acronym: One Together with Humanity Equality and Respect.
