In the '30 Days' book, I share a wisdom Kazi Mannan learned as a young boy from his mother, about sharing food generously. Obviously he took that lesson to heart, as he serves meals to homeless men and women each day at his restaurant - which he named after his mom, Sakina. We’ll be making KindSoup with Kazi on May 8th.

Kazi Mannan, owner of Sakina Halal Grill in Washington, D.C., grew up in poverty in a small village in Pakistan, without electricity or running water, one of ten kids. "Even when we were going through extreme poverty, my mother, whenever she cooked something good, she would say, 'Go give it to that neighbor, take it for that neighbor," Kazi chai told me. "We would get angry and say, 'But Mom, we don't have enough.' I didn't understand it then, but now I understand."
