Deeds: A Closet Full of Memories, to Share

The idea for this blog started with a desire to share the essence of Ramadan with my children. I wanted them to understand that beyond fasting, it's about doing good deeds, expressing gratitude, being our best selves. We decided that first year we would do one good deed each day; we thought blogging about it would keep us mindful and focused. So it began -  30 days, 30 deeds. On this first day of Ramadan 2016, as we look back on the past five years, here's the first post we ever published. The Montgomery County Muslim Foundation is organizing a bazaar of gently used traditional clothes for those who may need them for the Eid holidays — what a great idea. We collected at least twenty beautiful outfits, which I’ll dry clean tomorrow. Each one brought back wonderful memories — like the red and gold long tunic I wore at my engagement over 24 years ago, or the forest green one I was wearing the day my family surprised me with a baby shower during my brother’s wedding. We went through Saanya’s closet too, but I must admit it was harder to part with some of her outfits. I can picture her so clearly in each one: the gharara with little bells that she danced in at her mammoo’s wedding, or the gold and green one she wore for her Bismillah when she was five. So many of these outfits she wore only once or twice before she outgrew them. In my case, I’ve been holding on to certain outfits from my trousseau, so long ago. It’s time to share them — and to know that more pictures will be taken in them, more memories created, more good times enjoyed. InshAllah. Day 1: Deed 1: Sharing a closet full of memories
